The Institute is a centre for research and teaching in macromolecular chemistry and technology, chemical fibre technology and textile chemistry. It is involved in teaching in bachelor and continuing master and doctoral degree programmes.

The Institute provides expert, educational and scientific research activities in the field of traffic accident analysis and the development of new procedures and methods for use in expert practice. The Institute deals with the fields of transport, engineering and economics. It organises professional courses, seminars and debates.

The department has two sports halls or sports complex and provides teaching of physical education and sports. It organises sports competitions within and outside the university, and encourages student participation in the Czech Academic Games and Academic Championships. The sports facilities include a shipyard.
