The first written report dates back to 1197. The town is located at an altitude of 690 metres. In the town there is a union of volunteer firefighters, associations of fishermen and beekeepers and other sports and cultural associations.

The City of Karlovy Vary is a public corporation within the meaning of Section 2 (1) as well as a statutory city within the meaning of Section 4 of Act No. 128/2000 Coll. on Municipalities, as the basic legal regulation for the city's activities.
