The Geophysical Institute of the CAS, a scientific public institution, is one of the 54 research institutes of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic. Its focus falls under the Earth Sciences section. The Institute was established as a department of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences in 1953. It is a direct successor of the State Institute of Geophysics, founded in 1920.

We operate a multi-disciplinary facility. We focus on applied research. We are engaged in the development of medical devices and methods. We also provide correction of cosmetic defects or treatment of malignant and benign tumors of the oral cavity, neck and skin.

We are engaged in exploratory and targeted research of the atmosphere in its entire vertical range. Scientific activities are developed mainly in the directions of boundary layer atmospheric physics, mesosynoptic and applied meteorology, climatology, aeronomy, upper atmosphere physics and ionospheric and magnetospheric physics.
