The archive is involved in overseeing the records service in the Ministry of Defence, supervises shredding procedures, carries out the selection of archives and acts as a specialised archive. It searches the archives for information required by the authorities, legal entities and individuals, and presents archives to the public.

The National Film Archive is a state contributory organisation established by the Ministry of Culture. It takes care of the Czech film heritage.
