In the place where the Svratka River bites into the rocky peaks of the Bohemian-Moravian Highlands, the construction of a massive castle began in the 13th century. The first written mention of Kunštát dates back to 1279, but the discovery of the façade of the late Romanesque castle palace on the site of today's chateau dates back to the mid-13th century.
