The first written report dates back to 1144. The city is located at an altitude of 579 metres. The cultural monuments include mainly the pilgrimage church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary built by K.I. Dientzenhofer, in the settlement of Nicov, located 2 km east of Plánice, the parish church of St. Blažej and the Marian column.

The museum is located directly in Křižík's birth house. The exhibition was opened in 1957 and its core is a working arc lamp from 1884 connected to a power system.
