The cemetery was founded in the early 15th century. The oldest surviving tombstone dates from 1439. By the end of the 18th century, when the cemetery was closed, an estimated 100,000 people were buried here in several layers, including prominent figures. The tombstones are a testament to life in the Jewish ghetto.
