The founding of the church dates back to the period 882 - 884. The church was built by Prince Bořivoj I, the first baptized Přemyslid. Only the foundations of the rotunda have been preserved from the original church founded at the end of the 9th century by Prince Bořivoj, which are still preserved under the floor of the present church.
