The westernmost town of the Moravian-Silesian Region and at the same time the natural centre of the Rýmařov micro-region. It belongs to the Bruntál district and is a municipality with extended jurisdiction.

The first written report dates back to 1131. The town is located at an altitude of 267 meters. The population is 9563. The most important monuments include the Dean's Church dedicated to St Thomas of Canterbury, the plague column in Freedom Square and the Bishop's Castle.
