The first written report dates back to 1361. The town is situated at an altitude of 253 metres.

The municipal office is located in the building of the former District Office. It houses the city administration, the department of the secretary's office and the departments of finance, administrative activities and trade office, social affairs, construction and environment, education, culture, youth and sports and the department of real estate management.
