The town on the Elbe River, in close proximity to the Prague agglomeration, is a natural regional centre of the central Polabí region. It was founded in 1960 by the merger of two historic towns, Brandýs nad Labem and Stará Boleslav. The number of inhabitants as of 1 January 2025 was 20 896.
