The department provides instruction in biology with a focus on plant physiology, cytology and anatomy. It specialises in the stress physiology of photosynthesis in extremophilic organisms, biophysical methods in the study of cold and frost tolerance in plants, and the manifestations of oxidative stress in the photosynthetic apparatus.
The main purpose of the project is to ensure the operability of the J. G. Mendel Czech Science Station in Antarctica and related structures enabling the implementation of national Antarctic research and development.

We perform analysis of solid samples by laser ablation in conjunction with atomic spectrometry, development of plasma excitation sources for spectrochemical analysis and diagnostics of analytical plasmas. For research we use laser ablation systems, ICP-OES spectrometers, ICP-MS spectrometer and monochromator.

Seminary provides instruction in art history. Teaching specializes in a center for early medieval studies, a research center for the history of Central Europe, or the art and culture of early modern Moravia. We publish the journal Seminars in Art History. We cooperate with galleries or art museums.
