The Institute of Physics in Opava is the successor of the Institute of Physics, which was part of the Faculty of Philosophy and Science of the Silesian University in Opava since 1991

The basic research goal of the Centre is to investigate the socio-cultural horizons of medieval man across social stratification in order to bring the culture of (not only) Central Europe in the medieval period closer to us.

The Archives supervises the methodological management of the Central General Records Office and manages the museum collections housed in the old headquarters building.

We provide professional services for the development and implementation of national water policy focusing on hydraulics, hydrology, hydrogeology. We are engaged in promoting water protection, flood prevention and waste and packaging management, research on the status, use and changes of aquatic ecosystems and their links in the landscape.

We focus on research into the materials and processes of the Earth's crust and their effects on the environment. We study the structure and properties of anthropogenic sediments, physical laws and mechanisms of induced processes in rocks. We organize lectures at universities and courses.

Research on issues related to the extraction and use of energy resources. By uniting the research activities of two organizations, it will be possible to respond more effectively to the problems and practical tasks coming from users in the economic sphere.

The Centre was established primarily as a platform for collaboration of academics involved in pedagogical research at the Faculty. Pedagogical research is understood in its full breadth, i.e. including research in the areas of established pedagogical disciplines as well as research on major topics in pedagogy.

Research in the areas of engineering physics with a focus on solid and liquid phase mechanics and their interactions. We operate a centre for intelligent systems and structures.

Teaching, research and analytical activities in the field of nanotechnology. Focuses on the preparation of metal nanoparticles using biotechnology, preparation and characterization of layered silicates and hydrotalcites intercalated with organic molecules.

We operate an institute engaged in research and application of fuzzy modeling. We are engaged in the development of new algorithms for global optimization problems or improvement of software tools for fuzzy modeling of complex processes. We try to extend and improve existing fuzzy modeling methods.

The Institute is a research centre of the Faculty of Social Studies, cooperating with eight European universities in Finland, France, Germany, Austria, Poland, Slovakia, the UK and other affiliated members across Europe.
