The monastery was founded in 993 by Boleslav II and Abbot Vojtěch. The original buildings were in the Romanesque style. The church’s 11th-century crypt has been preserved beneath the Baroque Basilica of St. Margaret. The Baroque complex was built in stages between 1708 and 1745 according to a design by Kryštof and Ignác Dienzenhofer.

The shelter is well maintained, lighted, heated and fully functional when needed. There are public tours on one Saturday of each month. The shelter has its own tourist stamp and business card.
