Colonel Rochepin had the casemates at Špilberk—up to 100 meters long—built in 1742. At that time, the castle was gradually being transformed into a fortress. At first, the casemates served as barracks for soldiers and a food storage facility; after 1783, the spaces were converted into a prison for the most dangerous criminals in the Habsburg Monarchy.
