The foundation of the castle dates back to the late Middle Ages, approximately between 1380 and 1390, when Čeněk of Vartemberk took advantage of the natural defensive properties of the basalt rocks. The Museum was founded in 1891 in connection with preparations for the Czechoslovak Ethnographic Exhibition in Prague. The director of the girls' schools, Jáchym Metelka, was responsible for its establishment.

The memorial was established in 1957 in the grounds of Bran Castle as a reminder of his stay in the Podkrkonoší region before he left for Lešno in Poland. The memorial is a frequent place of visits of teachers, Czech and foreign tourists.
