The castle was founded sometime in the late 13th century during the last Přemyslids' colonization of the still sparsely populated border forest of northeast Bohemia, which was a royal property. Occasional performances of historical fencing groups are held on the grounds.

The final form of the castle was acquired in 1848-53, when it was rebuilt in pseudo-Romanesque, pseudo-Gothic and some parts in pseudo-Baroque style, which makes it without artistic value. Now the castle grounds are undergoing extensive reconstruction.
