In the place where the Svratka River bites into the rocky peaks of the Bohemian-Moravian Highlands, the construction of a massive castle began in the 13th century. The chateau was built as a castle in the middle of the 13th century, the extensive Renaissance reconstruction was carried out in the 17th century by the Novohradský family from Kolovrat. The oldest preserved part of the castle is the Vlček Tower. The last major reconstruction was carried out after the extensive fire of the Upper Castle in 1857.

The Neo-Gothic chateau Hrádek u Nechanic was built in the middle of the 19th century as a summer hunting and representative residence of the Harrach family. It offers tours in the historical exhibition, a quiet walk through the park and the possibility of wedding ceremonies and rentals. There is a café, a souvenir shop and a chateau park.

The construction of the prelature building in the Baroque style, sometimes also called the castle, was carried out in 1698-1701 by P. I. Bayer according to the design of J. B. Mathey. After the abolition of the Order in 1785, the entire estate was purchased in 1824 by the then Chancellor K. W. L. P. Metternich, who carried out the last building modifications.

Between 1778 and 1945, the castle was held by six generations of the Prussian princely Lichnowsky family from Voštice and Werdenberg.
