The institute provides teaching of several basic theoretical and preclinical disciplines at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Ostrava. The concept of the multidisciplinary department is based on its historical study activities, when it mainly provided teaching in biological, biochemical, biophysical and microbiological areas.

The department provides instruction in computer science and computer science didactics, data analysis, computer graphics, computer networking and programming. We offer the possibility to study the Bachelor's degree in Applied Computer Science and the follow-up Master's degree in Information Systems or the PhD degree in Applied Computer Science.

We deal with additional, extension and specialisation studies. We focus on research activities in the field of complementary educational studies in education. We develop study materials and carry out innovations in the specialisation study of school management and educational counselling.

The Department provides teaching and research activities in the Department of Pathology and the Department of Emergency Medicine and Forensic Sciences. We offer the opportunity to study the Bachelor's degree courses in Social Pathology and Logistics of Field Risk Situations or in Paramedic.

The department provides tuition in working with colour, colour pigments and colour phenomena in the broadest sense by model and still life. We offer the opportunity to study both undergraduate and postgraduate courses in Painting.

The department provides teaching in psychology and social work. We offer the option of single and double major in Psychology or a follow-up double major full-time course in Teaching Psychology for Secondary Schools.

The institute provides teaching in the field of hygiene and epidemiology. We offer the opportunity to study the Bachelor's degree programme in Public Health Protection and the follow-up Master's degree programme Professional Worker in Public Health Protection.

The department provides teaching of physical education, recreation, leisure education and physical education teaching for the second level of primary schools. We offer the opportunity to pursue a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education with a concentration in Education.

The department provides teaching of social pedagogy and preparation of teacher education students with a focus on leisure and re-socialization. We offer the possibility of full-time and combined studies in Andragogy or Pedagogy and a follow-up Master's degree in Teacher Education.

The department provides teaching in the field of surgery with a focus on standardization of surgical procedures in minimally invasive surgery. We provide teaching of theoretical and practical surgical specialties in gynecology, surgery, obstetrics, cardiac surgery, neurosurgery, ophthalmology and others.

The department's teaching activities focus on the preparation of teachers for primary schools and future specialists in the field of Bohemia. The focus of the department's educational activities is on the professional preparation of future teachers of mother tongue for the second level of primary schools.

The department is the focal point for national and international grant programmes and was established to develop project activities at the Faculty. With the support of the Project Department, FSS OU handles a wide range of projects, both in the field of grant titles and contract research.
